Old Sarge’s Last Ride

Old Sarge
Relationships come in many forms. Our relationships with the four-legged furry ones, whether we call them animals, pets, or family, are so very special. Its a bond that very rarely, if ever, is broken by the furry one, until their time has come. And that is the hardest break because we are never really ready to let a loved one go. I came across this story on Facebook, and thought it needs to be shared.

Sarge ‘s last ride

Today I was leaving the hospital from visiting my nephew who was born earlier in the day.

I stopped to get fuel. Looked over and saw this guy. The owner saw me looking and said “You got a dog?”.

I said No, not any more.

He said “old Sarge is going for his last ride. His heart is failing fast. We’re having him put down in the morning. Don’t want to see him keep suffering. So i thought we’d go for a ride, one more time”.

We talked about Sarge and my nephew and how things begin and end. The circle of life. I asked if he minded me sharing the story on Facebook and on the WDXE 98.3 Morning show.

He said, “Old Sarge would be honored”.

Let’s make Old Sarge go Viral … Share this let’s see where all he can go…

Well, they absolutely did make the story go viral. At last count, it had 181,327 likes, and 232,700 shares. Old Sarge has been getting around.  His owner, Dennis Gowder, responded to this outpouring of love:

THANK YOU

EVERYONE ONE OF YOU, BRINGS ME TO TEARS. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH THIS MEANS. SARGENT HAS BEEN LIKE A SON TO ME. THAT CONVERSATION AT THE GAS STATION WAS A DIVINE APPOINTMENT.. NOW THIS?? :..o)

TEACHES ME, THAT ALTHOUGH LIFE’S NOT ALWAYS EASY, WERE ALL ON THIS RIDE TOGETHER. MAYBE RELATIONSHIP IS THE MIRACLE OF THAT CIRCLE OF LIFE WE SHARE. WE ALL HAVE GOOD HEARTS AFTER ALL.

IM GONNA MISS SARGENT MORE THAN ANYTHING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMFORT & COMPASSION TO SHARE.

LOVE YOU

-Dennis & Sargent

So long Sarge, see you on the rainbow bridge.

WOW. I can’t imagine the pain that came with that decision. This story made me cuddle my dog. I don’t want this to ever happen..ever.
